Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee
We are a 501(c)(3), non-profit agency, founded in 1975, that serves
children in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties by providing positive
role models and social opportunities that promote healthy growth
and achievement. For more than 30 years, we've connected thousands
of children and volunteers through powerful, one-to-one mentoring
relationships.
Mission
To help children reach their full potential through professionally
supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships
Children Served
More than 2,100 mentoring relationships supported in 2007
Service Area
Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, an area that is home to more than
62,000 "at-risk" youth
Programs
We serve youth in two ways: community-based mentoring and site-based
mentoring. Both involve a one-on-one friendship between a caring,
adult volunteer and a child aged 6-17. Read
more about our programs.
Program Outcomes
Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in reducing youth
violence and drug abuse and improving school attendance and performance.
Our 2006 school-based program outcomes include:
- 78% of Little Brothers and Sisters were better prepared for
their classes
- 80% developed better relationships with adults
- 82% were getting along better with their peers
Growing Strong
Our goal is to provide Bigs for thousands more children
in the Metro area, with a special focus on serving children of incarcerated
parents, an especially at-risk population. To accomplish this we
need two things: volunteers
and funds.
Both will make sure that many more children will fulfill their full
potential.
