Mentoring Works

Independent research has proven the impact of
Big Brothers Big Sisters relationships.

We know the difference a Big Brother or Big Sister makes in the life of a child--we see it all the time in the smiling faces of our Littles--but you don't just have to take our word for it.

In 1992 and 1993, Public/Private Ventures, a Philadelphia-based national research organization, looked at more than 900 kids, half of whom were matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister.

After 18 months, researchers found that children who regularly spent time with a Big were:

  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • more confident in their school performance
  • one-third less likely to hit someone
  • getting along better with their families

Real Stories

Little Brother Franklyn, age 15
“Without my Big Brother, I would be a lot different. I would have nobody to talk to or to do things with.

My Big Brother is very intelligent and a nice person. He gives me what I need if it’s right for me, and he looks out for me.

I love my Big Brother. He's the best person I know"
