Help a Kid, Not Just a Cause

Make a difference in a fun, meaningful way as a College Big.

Why get involved?
Being a College Big Brother or Big Sister is a fun way to give back, gain valuable experience and be a kid again for a small part of your week.
Your friendship can help a child build self-confidence, do better in school and start thinking about college.

Hundreds of students from Carroll University, Marquette University, UWM and other area colleges are making a difference in their community by volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters. It's a great way to meet other students, get into your community and be part of positive change.

How does it work?
You'll be paired with a child who needs a positive friend. Meet with your Little Brother or Sister once a week to play games, shoot hoops or do schoolwork. Scheduling is flexible--choose your time and day to meet from options during the school day or after school.

Choose from two volunteer options: meet at a school site near campus or pick up your Little and do things on your own. University transportation provided for Marquette and UWM students!

What's expected of a College Big?
Just be yourself and be a friend. Show up every week. What's expected is that you spend time with your Little consistently for four consecutive semesters (two years).

How do I get involved?
We will be taking new College Bigs applications for the 2010-11 school year in August and September. E-mail volunteer@bbbsmilwaukee.org for more details.

Real Stories

Big Brother TraVon
Be a Big Brother like this guy. It's cool!

Big Brother TraVon and Little Brother Julian meet every week at Hartford Avenue School, an elementary school on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM).

Like Julian, TraVon was raised by a single mom, and he knows the importance of a male role model. When they're not shooting hoops, the two enjoy just sitting and talking. TraVon, a student at UWM, shares his college experiences with Julian to encourage his college aspirations.
